Screen-Free Activities

20 Screen-Free Bedtime Activities for Kids

These low-prep, screen-free activities help children shift from busy-day energy into a quieter bedtime mood.

By Legendary Tales Club

Screens can be useful during a busy day, but bedtime often goes more smoothly when the final stretch is quieter and more connected. You do not need an elaborate craft or a cupboard full of supplies. Most of these ideas take only a few minutes.

Quiet activities for winding down

  1. Choose tomorrow’s weather outfit. Check the forecast together and set out comfortable clothes.
  2. Draw one good thing. Sketch a favorite moment from the day.
  3. Try a three-item tidy. Each person returns three things to their homes.
  4. Build a pillow reading nest. Arrange pillows and blankets for story time.
  5. Listen for five sounds. Sit quietly and name the sounds you notice.
  6. Do animal stretches. Reach like a tall giraffe, curl like a sleepy cat, and move slowly like a turtle.
  7. Make hand shadows. Use a bedside lamp to create simple animals on the wall.
  8. Tell a one-minute story. Pick a character, a place, and one small problem.
  9. Play “Would you rather?” Keep the choices gentle and silly: fly with owls or swim with dolphins?
  10. Share three thank-yous. Name people, moments, or comforts you appreciated today.

Imagination activities for bed

  1. Invent a dream destination. Describe the colors, sounds, and friendly creatures there.
  2. Pack an imaginary suitcase. Choose five things for a moon trip or forest picnic.
  3. Finish the sentence. Try, “Behind the tiny blue door, we found…”
  4. Give a toy a goodnight adventure. Imagine where it travels after the lights go out.
  5. Create a family story chain. Take turns adding one sentence at a time.
  6. Name a new constellation. Look from the window or invent one from memory.
  7. Design a cozy creature. Decide what it looks like, eats, and uses as a blanket.
  8. Take five balloon breaths. Slowly fill an imaginary balloon, then let the air out.
  9. Read aloud together. Let your child turn pages, repeat a phrase, or voice one character.
  10. Choose tomorrow’s story theme. Pirates, dinosaurs, cloud cities, or something entirely new.

Keep the choice small

Offer two activities rather than the whole list. A small choice gives children some control without adding another long decision to the evening. Repeat favorites freely; familiar activities often become the strongest bedtime cues.
